Elijah Crosby (1764 – 1835) purchased 550 acres of land from General Henry Champion who had obtained this land in 1798 as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Mr. Crosby’s acquisition of this land (now Rome Township), was the first known sale of land in the township and it was purchased sight unseen. The price paid was forty cents per acre. In 1805, Elijah Crosby came to this “New Connecticut”, accompanied by Abner and Daniel Hall. In that same year, Timothy R. Hawley began surveying this territory into 50 lots, one mile long east to west and one half mile wide, north to south.
